This list is not comprehensive, nor is it meant to recommend any of these journals.

Journals that publish original research by students
Zebrafish continues to accept manuscripts with K-16 students as first authors. Contact the Zebrafish education editors, Jennifer Liang ( or Lara Hutson (, for more information

Journal of Young Investigators
“JYI's mission is to improve undergraduate science training by providing innovative, high-quality educational experiences in science writing, publication and the peer-review process.”

Journal of Student Research
“Journal of Student Research is based in Houston, TX. It is an electronic, peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal (ISSN: 2167-1907) devoted to the rapid dissemination of current research. Our aim is to familiarize student authors with the process of manuscript publication.”

Journal of Emerging Investigators
(suggestion from Brent Bill, UCLA)
“The Journal of Emerging Investigators is an open-access journal that publishes original research in the biological and physical sciences that is written by middle and high school students.  JEI provides students, under the guidance of a teacher or advisor, the opportunity to submit and gain feedback on original research and to publish their findings in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Because grade-school students often lack access to formal research institutions, we expect that the work submitted by students may come from classroom-based projects, science fair projects, or other forms of mentor-supervised research.”

Restricted Submission Eligibiligy (lots of these, just a few examples)

Minnesota Academy of Science Journal of Student Research
“The JMAS seeks to encourage the publication of student work, particularly that work which has received awards at Academy competitions such as the Winchell Undergraduate Research Competition, the Junior Science and Humanities Symposia, and the Minnesota State Science Fair. Students must choose the level of review that their paper will receive, which may influence potential future or continuing competitions.”

Duluth Journal of Undergraduate Biology
The mission of this journal is to publish innovative, original work that advances the field of biology. To achieve this aim, the journal publishes articles written and edited by University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) undergraduate students and recent undergraduate alumni.”
Note-we may be interested in developing partnerships with other schools that want to collaborate on this journal. Contact Jennifer Liang ( or Shannon Stevenson ( if you are interested.

The Baldwin-Wallace College Journal for Research and Creative Studies
“The JRCS is an on-line journal that fosters intellectual exchange, growth in creative powers, and a spirit of inquiry among Baldwin-Wallace College students by publication of original research or other creative works by students or student-faculty collaborators. The Journal’s guiding principle is that building scholarship is best promoted by active participation in the creation and dissemination of research, creative writings, and art.”

Berkeley Undergraduate Journal
“The Journal offers undergraduates the chance to express their ideas to a broader, university-wide, audience. By publishing scholarly work from a variety of disciplines and by collaborating with university faculty, administration, and student authors, the Journal integrates into discussion the diverse discourses of our university's intellectual community.”

“Beta Beta Beta believes that research is not finished until its results are shared with others. To promote that goal and assist students in learning how to complete the publication process, the society offers its members the unique opportunity to publish their undergraduate work in the pages of its journal, BIOS.”
